How To Be a Power Citizen
Lobbyist
Every time a legislator votes on anything,
he or she has a tally sheet of how many contacts have been received from
constituents about the bill being voted upon. This means every time you
make personal contact, call, fax or e-mail your opinion to your legislator,
it is recorded for the tally. Consequently, YOU WILL BE HEARD!
HOW TO CONTACT YOUR PUBLIC SERVANT
IN ORDER OF POWER IMPRESSION
1. Personal contact - By appointment
- dropping by his/her office at the Capitol without an appointment. Attending
public meetings in the district.
2. Telephone his capitol office and district office if he/she has one.
3. Fax, e-mail or personal letter. If you choose these options, be sure
to provide your name, address and phone number. In addition, due to the
lag time, don't wait till the last minute to make contact. The legislative
aide has to print out, collect and/or read the material and right before
voting, this might not get done in time to be tallied.
WHAT TO SAY TO MAKE A POWER STATEMENT
1. Provide bill number and name of author
of bill. Provide your name, your address, your phone number (if writing
or phoning).
2. State why this bill PERSONALLY effects you. If you are a practitioner,
explain why health freedom will protect your business. If you are a consumer
of natural health services or expect to be in the future, explain that
you want to protect access to unlicensed natural health practitioners.
Ask your legislators to support the bill. (Both Senate and House Member)
3. If phoning or dropping by without an appointment, be aware that even
if you find your legislator is not in, be sure to explain to the legislative
aide the purpose of your visit and give him/her the same outline of why
you want your legislator to support this bill. You can ask that the legislator
call you back. Or, you can say that you will be contacting the office
again to confirm he/she will be sponsoring the bill. AND....be sure to
follow through if you promise to call back.
4. Phone messages....it is always better to talk live to somebody during
office hours but feel free to leave a detailed message if that is all
you have time for. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday. You can also call after hours and on weekends. In all phone messages,
give you name, your address, your phone number, bill number, name of author
and the reasons why you want him/her to support the bill.
